Participación ciudadana (To 1920)

The Correíllos were originally a sailing ships carrying the Spanish Postal Service mail between the Canary Islands and overseas whose first line opened in 1855 with the task of connecting the islands major commercial (Gran Canaria and Tenerife), two to three times per week. The frequency with the rest of the smaller islands (La Palma, Lanzarote, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, El Hierro) was reduced, and not forgetting, trade with Cuba and England, major trading partners

Isolation is a constant in the history of the Canary Islands.
The Correillo La Palma was built by W. Harkerss & Son Ltd., Middlesbrough and launching took place on 15 February 1.912. After the 10 April, came the 16 commanded by Captain D. Aurelio del Arco and after a stopover in Bremen arrived in Las Palmas 24 de ese mismo mes.
Later, en 1.930, Mail Steamship Company Interinsular Canarios was acquired by the Company Transmediterranea and other boats came to support veterans Correíllos. These new ships are carectirzaban by having a white hull and is precisely why, primitives so became known Correíllos “the black Correíllos”.
Only “La Palma” survived the scrapping, siendo protagonista de mil y una aventuras y vicisitudes diferentes.
So, being in the port of Arrecife, the 16 March 1.976 suffered a serious fault in one of its boilers. The next day he arrived in Las Palmas. Since that time I was already scheduled next decommissioning and taking into account the high cost of having the boiler repair, acabó amarrado al muelle de Las Palmas en espera de lo que se decidiera en cuanto a su futuro.
The 12 November of that year was acquired at public auction and the amount of a million and a half pesetas by Jürgen Flick, who intended to convert it into a museum, yacht club and casino-restaurant. However, Mr. Flick stumbled upon the endless bureaucracy and paperwork almost infinite obstacles that joined, impedimentos y objeciones de todo tipo que acabaron con su paciencia.
Then, the 6 December 1.982 Liverpool City Council agreed to buy Flick boat to make it public cultural center, and for this purpose a committee was formed. But this operation was never carried. The 6 February 1.985, sick and not knowing what to do with it, Flick provides the boat, free to the city of Las Palmas. Not answered. Insists. Nada.
Steam “La Palma” now belongs to the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, by Flick family donation, former owner of the ship, that he had offered to other agencies and entities to save the dismantling.

In the capital of Gran Canaria was founded the Friends of the steam “La Palma”, he tried to avoid at all costs the veteran out of his enclave ship, adding to it several political bodies of the island and other representations. Ultimately, day 13 March and in tow of Tamarán”, in good weather conditions, the steamship La Palma” inició su última singladura hacia el Puerto de Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Walking through the narrow streets of San Lucas in Santa Cruz de Tenerife you find the temple, the primer you view on it is strange that you asked that story hidden behind this monumental facade. By collecting information on it turned out to be one of the few buildings built as a Masonic temple in Spain who survived the Franco dictatorship and which survives today.

The temple was built between 1899 and 1902, according to project architect Manuel Municipal Chamber, whose funding was provided by the Lodge Añaza. The original construction budget was 15.000 pesetas, not including the front fence or enclosure, eventually rose to the work 20.008 pesetas, repartidas en doscientas acciones.
The building was used as a free school, School called Añaza, which was funded by the lodge. It was finally ceded to the City for the price of one peseta, con la condición de que se mantuviera como centro de formación de forma gratuita.
The building is recessed with respect to the surrounding, contains a strong Egyptian symbolism inspired mainly (reflecting the importance that during the late nineteenth century gave the Egyptian symbology). The facade is divided into three; The system features two huge columns embedded, with smooth wood and palm leaf capitals (palmiformes), holding a large triangular pediment,in this one is an eye with radiant rays (the all-seeing eye) on behalf of the Supreme Being, Gran Arquitecto del Universo según la simbología masónica .
Flanking each column, are two sphinxes (four total) that were made by the sculptor Guzman Compaña Zamorano (1878-1944). The front door is carved wood with geometric, thereon, the lintel is decorated with palm leaves and a sun with wings of an eagle, símbolo de Horus.
Once entered the building leads to a hallway. which leads to “room taken”, This space is preserved mosaic floor, embossed columns, and high space presiding the living. However, ceiling frescoes have been repainted in white wooden structure covered by an aluminum ceiling

In the sub-soil is a Chamber of Reflections, hecha en un tubo volcánico natural.

On the second floor is the banquet hall with large windows to the front, the auditorium being social .
The day 18 July 1936 military rebellion took place would start civil war and Franco, the same day the rebel troops entered the temple and confiscated all property and records. shortly after, became the Military Pharmacy store, activity which he combined later with optics for the Army, while the top was fitted as a barracks for soldiers until 1990 quedarïa cerrado hasta la fecha.
Finally, the State sold the building to the City of Santa Cruz in the year 2001 more than 470.000 euros.
It's a shame that a building that is part of the history of the city is in a state of semi-ruin, por lo que su restauración y conservación considero que es necesaria .

The excavation of the mountains to house construction is an ancient practice of which there are many examples around the world. The case of temples carved into volcanic tuff Lalibela (Ethiopia), is a very curious example that stands out for its uniqueness.

THE troglodytism, ie human use of caves and underground excavated spaces is an ancient practice. The caves were always one of the first shelters used by man, nomadic wandering in that our ancestors practiced primitive. The sculpture and architecture on rocky foundations has been practiced by many different civilizations, as evidenced by the pierced temples of Abu Simbel in Upper Egypt, the enigmatic city of Petra in Jordan, rediscovered in the early nineteenth century or the heads of U.S. presidents more meanings, carved on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota to 1930.

The regions south of Egypt in the upper basin of the Nile were always territories for the supply of good building materials. The quality of the granite was prized by builders of Egyptian civilization and, thus, much of its monuments were executed with fluvially transported stones from the quarries Ethiopians. Auguste Choisy, en su famous History of Architecture, first published in 1899, explained how those ancient builders produced massive granite blocks, rock carving and making transport directly by dragging hand with ropes.

A great example of the sophistication that the Egyptians achieved with these techniques it was the preparation and placement of obelisks. Extraction can be performed directly rock carving and making grooves in the granite mass to disengage whole pieces of great length with bronze wedges. Its displacement is produced generally by use of rollers and traction hand these huge monoliths. The adapted transport ships, plying the river Nile to the sites chosen, was the supplement that facilitate its use in the various monuments built for the pharaohs for his subjects.

Plant of the church dedicated to St. George in Lalibela

A similar technique to that of the Egyptians, heir to these ancient traditions, is the one that would be used throughout the twelfth century to excavate the pilgrimage sites of Lalibela, the new Jerusalem, in a mountainous region of northeastern Ethiopia. There are numerous examples of concentrated rock-cut architecture which resulted from a concerted effort, sponsored by a monarch called Frost Mesqel Lalibela.

Ethiopia should be a fascinating country. It is a semi-desert territory repository of an ancient culture that has survived to this day, having branches in other locations away from the world. An example of this is the Rastafarian movement, entrenched en Jamaica, recalls that these cultures and idolizes al disappeared last emperor of Abyssinia. One Ethiopian empire, heir of the kingdom of Axum, came to occupy in its heyday an immense extent, current integrating Somalia, Djibouti, eastern Sudan and South Egypt. He had several dynasties that would end with the overthrow of Negus (emperor) Haile Selasi en 1974. A branch of Orthodox Christianity would develop in that area of the world over hundreds of years, as a split from the Church of the East. Ethiopian Copts are known, as well- Lalibela have maintained that culture unique to this day, through numerous avatars and defending the powerful influence of Islam.

During the Arab invasion of Abyssinia, them axumita would move to the rugged plains of the north and there would remain the remains of a way of understanding religion in secret isolation for centuries fortified. In this part of North Africa, after implantation hegemonic Islam, would follow him practicing Orthodox worship in the sus variants nestorianas monofisitas.

Photos: A.Davey, Flickr

A mid-twelfth century, King Lalibela of the dinastía Zagwe be proposed recall some Bible passages building a series of scenarios that would be excavated along decades in the red rock tuff existing in the region. The set consists of several buildings and enclosures excavated forming a vast complex of crypts, underground passages, open caves and galleries that make up a ghostly and silent world under the ground wet. Four churches excel in this scheme theatrical, Salvador houses calls, Mary, of Emmanuel and St George.

One such piece, perhaps the best known, church is Greek cross, dedicated to the San Jorge Beit Giyorgis. It is an authentic monumental sculpture carved into the granite rock vertically to a height of forty feet. It is accessed through a passage drilled horizontally into the hillside, communicating with a sort of open courtyard around the church. From this outdoor venue is accessed only organized structure cross with four equal-sized lateral spaces or access chapels that are a prelude to a large central volume topped by a dome. The set is lavishly decorated inside with frescoes that show their cultural relationship with Constantinople.

Beit Giyorgis is a curiosity and aesthetic architectural structure whose power is due to the way it was executed and also hints that produces profoundly unaware of that fact architectural history.

In our day, architects have become fascinated by the human effort and take it as an inspiration. Is the case, as an example of the influence, Dutch team Search, formed by Dick van Gameren y Bjarne Mastenbroek, who would make a brilliant work of architecture, Netherlands Embassy in Addis Ababa of 2005, tomando como referencia estos precedentes.

To 1960, some visitors Nordic climatic advantages discovered south of the island of Tenerife. By the end of that decade had installed some nursing home dedicated to the recovery of pulmonary and physical rehabilitation during the Northern Hemisphere winter season.

At that time, access road south of the island was extremely difficult effort requiring several hours to traverse settlements that dotted the mediocrity of the south side of the island. The southern highway linking the capital Santa Cruz with the peoples of the south of the island starting as a branch from the junction of the Hill on the outskirts of the city and connecting on Candelaria, Guimar, Fasnia, Arico y Granadilla para llegar finalmente a Los Cristianos desde la parte alta de Arona.

The spatial pattern of Tenerife Island Plan. Doxiadis Iberian, 1972

An idea for planning urban island, the Island Plan 1972, designed by Doxiadis Iberian naturalization papers give a series of initiatives that would transform a radically the way they interacted with the island of Tenerife, communications, its economy, etc.. That document would provide the outline of a new way of communication and connection with the south island it would be critical to the territorial model change, la autopista the TF-1. Beside it also designing a battery of infrastructure and land allocations that have scheduled the development of the island along fifty years. This is the case of the Reina Sofia airport, the port and industrial area of Granadilla, the allocation of the coast for tourist use, etc.

Behind her the project would Wintersol, a health facility and rationally planned and would include services and spaces for rehabilitation. It would be an exemplary work of architects Saavedra Diaz Llanos and serve as a reference for much of the later buildings designed, in one way or another, a acoger a los nuevos visitantes provenientes del norte de Europa.

In recent weeks the Internet has circulated a copy of an article on Canary, published the year 1955, in the American magazine National Geographic Magazine.

In esa Reseña, acompañada shocking unas imágenes de las Islas, Jean and Franc Shor presentaban las Costumbres, them the cities and landscapes of the Canary Islands more Highlights, as an idealized paradise floral friendly inhabitants Dedicated las Labores agrícolas. Well dirían: There hay trabajo y comida para todos: los precios y los salarios son bajos.

Ideologically, the image of the Canary Afortunadas habitat is rebuilt from the late nineteenth century under a idealized interpretation of the Past, reflected throughout most of the text and illustrations, masking a straitened times in which was very sad Canary economically. They were years in which the islanders tried to leave their backwardness, projecting abroad as a way of scenery and unique culture in search of mass tourism. This explains thoughts like the following: The Corpus Christi is the time when people wear their nicest clothes, there singing and dancing day and night. Canary is always wonderful and I think I will like the islands of Fortune, in the words of Francisco Pérez Naranjo, contained in Article. In colorful islands, Native pave the streets with petals at the time of Corpus, Shor also say

Tourism is a way to present the attractions of a place like intangible economic resources rely on the photographic image. Some of this has been explained Carmelo Vega in his book, Logical Photo Tourist.

The interesting, in this case, is to analyze in detail the combination of images interspersed, that teach the territory, urban forms and customs festive, almost ready for contemplation. A Canary imagery exhibiting a scenic pastoral culture, chaired by beautiful young fishers and farmers radiant.

In 1955, coastal areas of the cities of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, had not yet suffered the powerful transformations that involved the construction of Maritime Avenue, on the one hand, and occupation by the barrier of buildings Marina Street, other. The main street of the town of La Laguna appears inhabited by pilgrims and their livestock, with all the traditional houses that existed, intact; while, on the island of Lanzarote, a peasant family mounted his camel through an interior landscape of Haria Valley, widely cultivated; and in the Llanos de la Palma, a group of children appear next to your home, rodeados de flores y chumberas.

Comparing with some existing images, the densification process and increased volumes has been devastating.

In forty years, islands have experienced massive degradation process in which the coast has been occupied without any care. Thereby, radically privatized is the main value that gave rise to the tourism industry, the use of the coast to enjoy the sun and beach. With so many negative consequences to the future, on which action should be systematic and coordinated in the future if we want to maintain a competitive manner that productive resource.

The Coastal Act of 1988 established a controversial mechanism for the protection of that strip of land between the land and sea. His flaw is that regulatory action was a precautionary basis only. Construction reservation between 20 and 100 meters, established from the seashore, was a good idea, which has then been subverted massively, thereby generating enormous criticism collective. A Coast transformative process, with the support of many government and public institutions and which has tried to continue the division between private operators speculative real estate and the ultimate benefit of the big chains. Just remember some examples such as the Hotel carob in Carboneras or coast of Playa Blanca en Lanzarote para sentir vergüenza ajena.

The contradiction is that the space landscape, which generated enormous wealth, should have been properly preserved with positive actions and consideration as collective public good.
I recently had the opportunity to read this book already published in the years 60 and has been re-edited by the Ed Cliff, escrito por Albert Speer el Arquitecto predilecto de Adolf Hitler y Ministro de Armamento durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Albert Speer was one of the few people trusted the dictator, was his confidant and one for whom he had a real friendship and admiration. The only time that Adolf Hitler went to Paris once invaded, algido decided to savor the moment of his military triumph sharing with two architects Albert Speer and Herman Giesler, discriminating against military generals and party leaders, resulta tan sorprendente como si George Bush una vez invadido Irak se hiciera acompañar por Michael Graves y Frank Gehry en su visita triunfal.

It was an efficient technocrat and a brilliant organizer who gave form to the Fuhrer's visionary dreams. Speer was primarily a means to an end, the more pleasing to his patron. greater would be the rewards. It suited the extravagant tastes of Hitler, if this would have required an abstract style Speer would have given, pero lo que le gustaba era la antigua Roma y Speer hizo cuanto pudo para dársela.

In the decade of the thirties both Speer and Mies Van der Rohe were willing to work with the most abominable character of all time, the difference is that Speer was devoted entirely to meet the architectural ambitions of their master, mientras Mies era capaz de transigir en temas políticos pero era inflexible en lo que se refería a la Arquitectura.

In the late thirties Hitler and Speer wanted to reorganize Berlin called Germania Pharaonic project that developed along a central boulevard five kilometers. In the North end Speer based on sketches drawn by Hitler in the years 20 thought in a building with a huge dome inspired by the Pantheon, this dome height would 200 m and a diameter of 250 m, that is a real exaggeration, When the father saw the model of Speer (architect also) just came to say you are crazy!.

I particularly while reading the book about what surprised me was his ability to manipulate, with a very engaging personality that impressed those who knew him, acting like a real snake charmer, both in the Nazi period and in the Nuremberg trials where with his oratory and their justifications were able to escape from the gallows.
